Joe Sinnott (1926 – 2020)

So news came down that comic book inker Joe Sinnott passed away the morning of June 25th, 2020. Sinnott was best for his work with Marvel comics. The legendary artist drew for iconic titles such as Fantastic Four, Captain America, and The Avengers. The comic book industry, such as the Inkwell Awards has been paying their respects to a legend. (Sinnott was involved with the Inkwell Awards)

Last year I was lucky enough to meet him at an Upstate NY comic con, IncrediCon. That day was a good day. My table was in between two talented artists, sold some of my own comics, did a commission, and met an Instagram friend.

As things were winding down, I decided to pop by Joe Sinnott‘s table. Sinnott, the guest of honor was sitting next to his son. Taking a chance, I asked if Mr. Sinnott was still doing commissions. Surprise – he was! So I got a commission as a birthday present for Ben. Sinnott drew one of the classic Marvel characters, Thor.

After I picked up the commission, I believe his son told me Joe was still drawing everyday. Apparently he drew everyday until the end. That itself, is inspiring to any artist. Age really is just a number. Age only matters when you allow yourself to be limited.

With that, my condolences to the Sinnott family. Thank you Joe Sinnott for the many years you spent creating. Godspeed.

Tomorrow – Interview W/ Mark Torres (It Came From The Radio)

Tomorrow night, Wednesday May 20th, 2020 from 7-8 pm ET on WHCSradio.org, I’ll have returning guest Mark Torres. Mark hosts his own radio show titled It Came From The Radio. ICFTR promotes indie comic creators, film makers, and writers while also covering the latest in sci-fi, horror and comic book entertainment. Mark is also working on his own comic. We had a blast last time I interviewed him, so he’s coming back. Mark’s show was recorded in the studio at Grindhouse Radio. Grindhouse Radio, otherwise known as GHR is known for being an internationally syndicated, award winning, pop culture talk radio series, featured on iHeartRadio and 19 other syndicated networks with between 3.5 – 4 million listeners weekly worldwide. ICFTR can also be heard from Beyond The Dawn studios.

After this episode, the season will wrap up. There might be a summer season in the works, if I’m not too busy working on my own projects. On my end I’m working on completing a webcomic, to be posted soon.

Other news. Unless it’s an online/virtual comic book convention, I won’t be partaking in any physical cons this year. The year 2020 has already been scratched off. It’s not worth the risk. Especially when information about COVID-19 changes daily.

This doesn’t mean I haven’t stopped creating. In response to any quarantines, I’ve re-opened my Etsy store: Michele Witchipoo. You can purchase some of my comics there. There’s also handmade holiday ornanments, greeting cards, and eventually other items for sale. Check back every so often, the store will continue to have more merch posted.

I’ve also officially launched my Patreon account. Still learning the in and outs of Patreon fund raising. You can subscribe starting at $5.00 a month.

New Radio Episode This Wednesday

If you haven’t heard, I’m doing my radio show again. This time remote. You can hear the show every Wednesday from 7-8pm ET on WHCSradio.org.

Last week I interviewed returning guest Maria Photinakis. She recently had an article in the Boston Globe about her Covid19 diaries, which you can check out on WEBTOON. Hopefully I can upload the latest interview here. Past episodes can also be heard on Spotify, iTunes podcast, and other outlets.

This Wednesday I’ll be interviewing punk rock artist and musician Anthony Begnal. He’s done comics and co-founder, along with his wife, of the band Chesty Malone and The Slice Em Ups. Self proclaimed as ‘Satanic Brooklyn Scum’, the band has played the East Coast and Midwest for over 13 years. Chesty has merch available for sale.

MICE 2019 Recap

With this quarantine now in place back in NYC, I finally have a chance to post about the past few months. Of course, the pandemic wasn’t the way I wanted this happen. With that, let’s look on some happier times.

I was invited to stay with a friend during MICE Expo 2019. October 2019 was particularly special, because it was their tenth anniversary. For those into indie, alternative, underground and non-superhero comics, MICE, which stands for Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo, is one of the best indie comic cons. It takes place annually over at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In conjunction with MICE was Podtales, taking place next door.

One of the 2019 guests of honor was Xamie Hernandez, one half of Los Hernandez Bros. He had a panel discussing his career, from Love and Rockets onward. It should be noted that one of the sections, formely known as the Robert Crumb room, was renamed after Xamie Hernandez.

There were two other MICE panels worth mentioning. One was titled Understanding Nancy. The panel, moderated by Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden spoke about the classic newspaper strip. Based on the Eisner-winning book How to Read Nancy: The Elements of Comics in Three Easy Panels, they discussed how Nancy had an impact on the cartooning medium.

Drawing Power was the name of the panel discussing the anthology Drawing Power: Women’s Stories of Sexual Violence, Harassment, and Survival. On the panel was respected underground cartoonist Diane Noomin, along with three contributors, Katie Fricas, Claire Folkman and Kelly Phillips. Noomin was the anthology editor, gathered the contributors by invite only. The recent #metoo movement was one of the catalysts behind this collection.

The next day, the event was just as crowded. Attendees discovered new comics and art.

Due to the COVID19 pandemic, MICE is reassessing whether or not to go ahead with the 2020 con. This was the right thing to do. By June, MICE officials should know whether or not to go ahead. You can check any updates on the website. Other comic cons scheduled in 2020 have followed suit. Until then, here’s to perhaps, 2021.

New York is now under a ‘forced’ quarantine.

Strange times indeed.

You think people would be fighting over food, shelter, and other necessities. Instead a good majority are hoarding toilet paper.

America – the country of assholes.

Hey. I don’t want to catch COVID-19 either. Otherwise known as my friend says, CRAPVID-19. After what I’ve seen the past few weeks, I have no problem going into isolation. I’m quite looking forward to it.

We’ll get through this pandemic. It’s not the virus I’m worried about.

It’s the ignorance, arrogance, and stupidity of the human race that will do us in.

Tomorrow I have a very special guest. I will be interviewing respected comic book artist, editor, art marketing, and creator Jamal Igle. Having been in the comic book business for 27 years, he’s done for many titles such as Supergirl and Firestorm. He’s also the creator behind Molly Danger, the co-creator behind Venture and artist behind Black from Black Mask Studios. If you don’t believe me, check out his Wikipedia.

This week’s Psycho Bunny sketch of the week is based on the horror classic Frankenstein, originally created by English author Mary Shelley, and later became iconic thanks to Boris Karloff’s performance in 1931. Although it should be noted that the very first Frankenstein film was released in 1910.

Squeaky Honors Black Cat Appreciation Day

Squeaky Squeakums, star of my latest comic is honoring Black Cat Appreciation Day. (August 18th) She got her demon buddy Magnus Maximus to round up a few of her black kitty sisters.

Black cats are awesome indeed. Despite their beauty, black and tuxedo cats have a hard time finding forever homes. ‘Tis a shame. I’ve personally found black and tuxedo cats to be quite smart. The real life Squeaky (who passed away a few months ago) was clever – especially when it came to food. So go down to your local shelter and adopt a black or tuxedo cat of your own today.

Squeaky was also the real life muse behind my latest comic. Available for order.
