Rockabilly Boogie – Psycho Bunny Sketch of The Week For 7/30/2019

A few weeks back, I caught a free show at Irving Plaza. The headliner was neo-Rockabily singer Robert Gordon. Originally part of the early NYC Punk movement, around the late ’70s he embraced his influences, turning to Rockabilly. Having worked with musicians such as Link Wray and Chris Spedding, his vocals took everyone back to a time when Elvis was actually cool. He was ahead of such retro rockers such as The Stray Cats (which as of this blog posting, is currently on a reunion tour.) While The Cramps pushed the envelope with it’s sinister psychobilly overtones, Robert Gordon stayed true to his roots.

In the past I’ve attending a few Rockabilly events, but not often enough. It was scattered throughout the years, such as attending shows in San Francisco, Connecticut, and recently a few years back at NYC’s Otto Shrunken Head.

If you’re curious about what Gordon sounds like these days, check out the footage from his gig at Irving Plaza, July 1st, 2019. Below is the song that he opened with, “Someday, Someway.” It was later covered by Marshall Crenshaw.

A few reminders. Today in the NYC area, I’ll be one of the five artists giving a quick talk at the monthly Trans-Cen-Der. Location in Bushwick, Brooklyn, at Brooklyn Fire Proof. Admission free, but limited seating.

On Saturday, there’s two events. During the day I’ll be selling my comics at Trashland Zinefest II. Free admission from 2-6pm in Ridgewood, Queens over at The Footlight.

Later in the evening, there’s the opening party at MF Gallery, for the Rocky Horror Picture Show art tribute. I’ll be one of the many artists who contributed. Check out my acrylic and glitter painting of Dr. Frank-N-Futer, framed.

Tomorrow – Trans-Cen-Der

Pardon the short notice. If you’re in the NYC area, particularly Bushwick, Brooklyn, then check out the monthly Trans-Cen-Der events at Brooklyn Fire Proof. Artists of all mediums and media show slides of their work. Then give a quick talk. I’m among one of the five artists this round. Admission is free, but seating is limited. The event runs from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm. Trans-Cen-Der is hosted and co-curated by artist Tim Gowan.

On Saturday evening, I will be attending the MF Gallery opening party for their Rocky Horror Picture Show art exhibit. Opening party is from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm. Costumes and Rocky Horror cosplay is encouraged. There will be a screening of the classic cut film as well.

Walking On The Moon – Psycho Bunny Sketch of The Week 7/21/2019

This past weekend in NYC was an oppressive, blistering heatwave. It impacted the majority of the East Coast to the Midwest of the U.S. If you were local, and wasn’t impacted by any blackout, you were lucky. Either way we all sweated our asses off. Global warming baby – embrace nature at it’s worse!

But you know…as I’m typing this blog post, with perspiration dripping down my face, the last thing I want to do is talk about this heatwave. It’ll only make me hotter. I’m sure you feel the same way too. Therefore let’s focus on something else; Apollo 11. The 50th anniversary of the U.S. moon landing.

Which leads us to the Psycho Bunny sketch of the week for July 21st, 2019. Posting this sketch early. This week will be a little tad on the busy side.

Trashland Zinefest II

If you’re local in the NYC area, particularly Ridgewood and Bushwick, then check out this one day event. Trashland Zinefest II. I’m going to have a table there, selling my latest comic, greeting cards and other goodies. It’s at The Footlight. The date is Saturday, Aug 3rd, from  2pm – 6 pm. Admission free.

Later that same night, come down to MF Gallery for the Rocky Horror Picture Show tribute. There’s going to be by various talented artists, costumes and a screening of the iconic film. Opening event is from 7 pm – 10 pm. Location in Brooklyn. I’m going to have a painting in that exhibit.

 

Stranger Things – Psycho Bunny Sketch of The Week 7/15/2019

Don’t watch many televisions shows nowadays. There’s a few exceptions. Got to watch season three of Stranger Things. Stranger Things is the popular Netflix series, very loosely based on The Montauk Project and The Philadelphia Experiment, combined with early to mid ’80s nostalgia.  The only reason I bothered to check out Stranger Things was The Montauk influence. After viewing season one, I was hooked.

As for both The Montauk Project and Philadelphia Experiment, those were conspiracy theories I had an interest in during the early 2000s. Although I never went so far to obtain a tin foil hat, I would entertain these theories. That was until 2016, when the phenomenon of fake news took over. Now all these conspiracy theories weren’t as amusing. Besides. Many of the hardcore conspiracy theorists were just plain nuts. You could say I lost my patience.

However, there is a special place in my heart for Montauk. If it wasn’t for my previous interest, I would have never bothered with Stranger Things. Once during the summer of 2000 or 2001 before 9/11, I spent a day trying to explore Montauk. I didn’t locate Camp Hero, but I did find the whole complete book collection in the Montauk Public Library.

It’s been said that Aleister Crowley also conducted magickal experiments at Montauk.

Back to Stranger Things. Once Hollywood got involved, there were some rearrangements. Montuak, Long Island became Hawkins, Indiana. The Duffer Brothers, the creators behind Stranger Things were almost sued. Right before it came to trail, the plaintiff withdrew. Guess The Duffer Brothers got some damn good lawyers.

We cannot deny though, that Stranger Things is one of the few decent television series. Season three did seem heavy on the mid ’80s kitsch, product placement, and adolescence romance. My new favorite character from Stranger Things was one I loathed; Billy Hargrove. Billy was the mean scuzbucket metal head. If you weren’t careful, he just might bang your wife. His thin porn ‘stache makes a nice touch. A few hours before working on this blog post, I wasted an hour online discussing Billy’s potential playlist. In my own theory, I figured there was two. One was for Billy himself, as he speeds down the road in his muscle car. Most likely he would blast Motley Crue, WASP, and David Lee Roth era Van Halen. The other one was when he gets together with the MILFS. He’ll get down and dirty with the Mrs. as Journey plays in the background – just before the husband gets home from work. Before I go any further, a round of applause is due for Australian actor and poet Darce Montgomery. Montgomery completely nails the role of the ’80s burnout lowlife. But I digress.

Might as well wrap this up with a long awaited Psycho Bunny sketch of The Week. From speculations, yes, this week’s sketch is Stranger Things influenced. If more time to spare, I could’ve done Billy fan fiction. Luckily there’s things I have to work on. Meanwhile, enjoy the Psycho Bunny sketch of the week for July 15th, 2019.

Squeaky Vs. Fireworks

Not everyone cares for fireworks. Family pets like cats, dogs and other animals get easily frightened by loud commotions. Squeaky Squeakums decided to do something about it. She enlisted the help of her demon buddy, Magnus Maximus to put a stop to those pesky fireworks during the Fourth of July.

Psycho Bunny Sketch of The Week July 4th Special (July 4th, 2019)

This is developing into an annual tradition. Instead of blogging about fireworks, family BBQs, and three day vacations, we’ll focus on the historical aspect regarding July 4th.

Today in American history 101, July 4th celebrates the country’s independence. Regardless of your political beliefs, let’s remember the Revolutionary War. Where barefoot colonialists battled against the British monarchy. Despite all odds, the American colonialists won. You can quickly read up more about July 4th here.

This year’s historic July 4th sketch was based on the famous painting by Archibald M. Willard. Originally titled ‘Yankee Doodle‘, Willard was a veteran of the American Civil War. His grandfather was also an American Revolutionary solider. The original painting itself was snubbed by art critics. Instead, the painting found it’s appreciative audience among the everyday citizen. The painting has found a place in modern pop culture, receiving nods ranging from Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse 5 to album cover art by the NYC 1980s Hardcore band Warzone.

Psycho Bunny on the other hand, thinks spirit of ’76 means something else. As in wine and spirits.
